Civil servants still hoping for a bonus

Monday, October 8th, 2007, The Star Online

CUEPACS is still hoping the Government would reconsider its decision not to give civil servants a bonus this year or, at least, replace it with an honorarium of about RM2,000 for each employee by the year-end.

Malaysia Nanban quoted Cuepacs president Omar Osman as saying that a bonus would help civil servants endure the sharp rise in the prices of goods.

It would also be a way of appreciating their contributions in conjunction with the country's 50th independence anniversary, he told reporters after launching the Cuepacs Community Service (CCS) programme in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday.

He said the Government should consider giving the honorarium for each government employee irrespective of grade as this would motivate civil servants to further improve their productivity.

Whilst appreciating the recent pay increases given to civil servants, he added that they had looked forward to receiving an incentive (bonus) as the Prime Minister himself had said that the civil servants' pay increase and bonus were two different matters.

On the CCS, Omar said it allowed Cuepacs members to channel grievances or problems through SMS.

The designated number is 33334.

Toll rate increase

Tamil Nesan quoted Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu as saying the Government would ensure that any highway toll rate increase would not burden the people.

He said his ministry was currently studying all proposals before the matter was taken to the Cabinet for a final decision.

He added that several groups such as the Malaysian Trades Union Congress and the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations had urged the Government not to increase the toll rates for eight highways next year.

Samy Vellu said the Government had to be responsible for the agreements inked with highway concessionaires allowing toll rates to be reviewed after a certain period of time.

He also said the findings of the study on the proposed toll rate increase would be submitted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

He was speaking to reporters after attending the launch of a project to upgrade Jalan Jeli-Jelawang-Gua Musang last Saturday.
